Why Do Speaker Bureaus Reject Speakers?

One of the big questions that we always ask speakers when considering for representation is - how many gigs are you booking a year, and at what fee?

If you’re in demand, it makes our jobs a lot easier.  Agencies aren’t there to build the motor, they want it already put together and well oiled.  You might think based on that analogy that I know something about cars, and you would be very wrong.  But, we want to continue to build upon what you already have.  And the more the better.

Of course, there are some rare circumstances where you can get representation without having first built up your own speaking business.  But unless you are Greta Thunberg, I’d recommend having a steady flow of speaking inquiries coming to you before you go seeking representation.

Another concern that we have is when a speaker doesn’t have a day job, and their entire income is dependent on speaking engagements.  A) that suddenly puts a lot of pressure on us!  And B) how are you staying relevant as a speaker?  If you’re not working in the field that you want to speak on - then how are you maintaining your profile amongst your peers and in general?  Again - there are many examples of speakers that don’t need a day job in order to stay relevant… but, if all you’re doing is speaking… after a while I would start to question your relevancy.

So, what does this all mean?

If you’re thinking about approaching a speaker bureau, don’t wait for them to build your speaking business for you. Build something they can build on.

Have a clear point of view. Know who you speak to. Have a track record of getting on stages. Be generating inquiries. Keep doing the work that makes you relevant.

Because the best time to approach a bureau isn’t when you’re thinking, “I really need an agent.”

It’s when you can say, “I’ve built something that’s working. Now I want to take it further.”

Your bureau should be the accelerator - not the engine.
